Dive Watches: How Much Water Resistance Is Enough? Read the Rating Before You Buy
The water-resistance number on a watch confuses a lot of people. This article explains clearly what each rating can handle, so your watch isn't damaged by the wrong kind of use.
What each rating means
- 30M (3BAR) → splashes and rain, hand washing; no swimming
- 50M (5BAR) → can get wet and handle a quick shower, but not proper swimming
- 100M (10BAR) → swimming and surface snorkelling
- 200M (20BAR) → swimming, snorkelling and skin diving with ease
Why you can't swim with 30M
Ratings are tested in still conditions, but swimming adds pressure from movement, so the real-world limit is lower than the number. Always allow a margin. More on model codes in water resistance + model codes.
Mistakes that damage watches
- Pressing buttons or turning the crown underwater
- Hot water, saunas and warm showers (heat degrades the seals)
- Not rinsing in fresh water after seawater or chlorine
Tip: water-resistance seals age. If you often take your watch in the water, have the seals checked or replaced regularly at our repair department.
Choosing a watch for the water
For swimming or water play, choose at least 100M. See well-rated models in the G-SHOCK and SEIKO lines.
FAQ
Can I shower with a 50M watch?
It can get wet, but we don't recommend warm showers or long soaks — heat and soap wear the seals out faster.
Can I go deep diving with 200M?
It's suited to swimming, surface diving and snorkelling. For scuba diving, use a model built to the dive-watch standard (ISO diver).
