Is G-SHOCK Really Waterproof? Reading Water Resistance + Decoding Model Numbers

The water-resistance number on the dial misleads a lot of people — for example, thinking 30M means you can dive to 30 metres, which isn't true. This article explains it simply so you can wear your watch with confidence without breaking it — see authentic G-SHOCK with clearly listed ratings.

How to read the rating

Water resistance is given in BAR or metres (for example 20BAR ≈ 200M), but it's a lab test at constant pressure, not a depth you can actually dive to. Moving your arm briefly creates more pressure than holding still.

A simple usage table

WR (no number) — splashes and rain only; keep it away from lots of water
5BAR / 50M — hand washing, rain and a quick shower are fine, but don't swim with it
10BAR / 100M — fine for surface swimming
20BAR / 200M — swimming and snorkelling with no problem; this is the rating most G-SHOCK models have

Whatever the rating, never press buttons or turn the crown while the watch is in water — water can get in straight away.

Decoding G-SHOCK model numbers

Model codes aren't random; they tell you the series and variant. GA = analog-digital, DW = all-digital, GW = radio time sync / solar, GM/GST = metal case. The final number often indicates the colour — for example, -1 is usually black.

Choose a rating that matches how you'll use it

For everyday wear with the occasional splash, G-SHOCK's 200M is more than enough. There's no need to pay extra for a deeper rating unless you do serious diving. Check each model's water resistance on its product page in our shop.

Can I swim with a 200M water-resistant watch?

Yes. A 200M (20BAR) rating is enough for swimming and snorkelling, but don't press buttons or turn the crown underwater, and avoid hot water and saunas.

Can I shower with a WR 30M watch?

We don't recommend it. Ratings below 50M are designed for splashes and rain only. Showers combine hot steam and water pressure that can let water in.
