Automatic vs Quartz Watches: What's the Difference and Which Should You Choose?

Many people can't decide between an automatic and a quartz watch. This article explains the difference simply and tells you which one suits you.

What is an automatic (mechanical) watch?

It runs on a purely mechanical movement, wound by the motion of your wrist, with no battery. Its charm is the smoothly sweeping seconds hand and the movement you can see through a display caseback. A popular example is the SEIKO 5 Sports.

What is a quartz (battery) watch?

A battery drives a quartz crystal. It's extremely accurate, easy to look after, lighter and cheaper to start with. The seconds hand ticks once per second. Brands like CASIO are known for tough quartz watches.

Do I have to wind an automatic watch every day?

If you wear it every day, your wrist movement winds it for you — no extra winding needed. If you leave it off for several days it will stop, and you'll need to wind it or put it back on.

Which lasts longer, quartz or automatic?

Both last if you look after them. Quartz has fewer parts, so it's easier to maintain; an automatic should be serviced periodically to keep the movement running smoothly for years.
